Detailed description

CYY-TL5 Infrared Carbon-Sulfur Analyzer — a rapid steel composition testing solution for pre-melt analysis, meeting the speed and accuracy demands of modern steel mills.

The critical factor in steel production is the moment when quality is determined: while the molten steel is still in the furnace, before casting. Once the steel has been poured and solidified, any deviation in chemical composition becomes scrap that cannot be salvaged. This is especially true for high-precision grades such as carbon steel 35# 45#, alloy structural steel, tool steel, bearing steel, stainless steel, and specialty steels. A carbon difference of just 0.1% between two grades can completely alter mechanical properties.

The carbon-silicon (C-Si) analyzer measures only molten iron, not molten steel. This gap leaves steel plants without a tool to monitor C and S composition right before the furnace. CYY-TL5 fills this gap.

Pre-furnace quick check process: 3-5 minutes from sample collection to result

Step 1: Worker takes a liquid steel sample using a sampling ladle from the furnace and rapidly cools it in water (Water Quenching) — approx. 30 seconds Step 2: Drill or grind the sample into powder or small chips — approx. 1-2 minutes Step 3: Weigh the sample (~0.5g for steel) on electronic balance 0.0001g — approx. 30 seconds Step 4: Mix with flux: silicon-molybdenum ~0.3g + tin granules ~0.3g + Pure Iron ~0.3-0.5g — approx. 30 seconds Step 5: Place in arc furnace CYY-TL5,, then click "Start Analysis" Step 6: Combustion + gas flow through infrared cell and detector — only ~35 seconds Step 7: Software displays C% and S%, generates report — approx. 10 seconds Total: From sampling to result — just 3-5 minutes

The entire pre-heating furnace adjustment cycle can be completed in 5-10 minutes: if C% is not met, add ferro-carbon (to increase carbon) or dilute scrap steel (to decrease carbon), then re-sample and test for an additional 3-5 minutes. Once compliant, the molten steel is poured into molds. This process is significantly faster than sending samples externally (3-7 days) and more cost-effective than OES (1/5 of the price).

Applications by Steel Type

Carbon steel 35# and 45#: Difference is only ~0.1% C. CYY-TL5 accurately measures the actual carbon content of the molten steel batch before tapping, allowing for adjustments prior to casting. Alloy structural steel (SCM435, 40Cr, 42CrMo):): Requires C ~0.33-0.43% + Cr/Mo. High sulfur (> 0.035%) causes hot cracking during forging/die casting. Detect sulfur pre-tap → perform desulfurization before casting. Tool steel (SKD11, H13, D2): High carbon (0.8-2.0%), extremely low sulfur (<0.02%). CYY-TL5 carbon measurement range up to 10% is sufficient for tool steel analysis. Bearing steel (GCr15, SUJ2):): Carbon ~0.95-1.05%, S ≤0.020%. Carbon deviation directly affects hardness uniformity and fatigue life. Stainless steel (304, 316, 430): Typically low carbon (<0.08% for 304L),). Sulfur must be controlled (<0.03%). CYY-TL5 measures sulfur down to 0.0005%, providing sufficient sensitivity for ultra-low carbon stainless steel. Specialty steel (heat-resistant, wear-resistant): CYY-TL5 controls both carbon and sulfur—two fundamental elements measured pre-tap—to establish an accurate basis for subsequent alloying. Free-cutting steel (Y15, 12L14): Intentional sulfur addition (up to >0.2%) improves machinability. CYY-TL5 sulfur measurement range up to 0.35% ensures precise analysis of high sulfur content in free-cutting steel. Optimal sulfur control balances excellent machinability with retained strength. Cast steel / Cast iron: Foundries require rapid determination of carbon and sulfur to adjust composition before pouring. CYY-TL5 is the most widely used equipment in foundries—from pre-tap analysis to final product quality control. Carbon structural steel / High-quality carbon steel (Q235, Q345, 20#, 45#): High production volume with a wide carbon range (low <0.25%, medium 0.25-0.60%, high >0.60%), sulfur typically required ≤0.050%. CYY-TL5 enables rapid pre-tap analysis and lot-based finished product inspection. Spring steel (55CrSi, 60Si2Mn):): Medium-to-high carbon; sulfur requires strict control. CYY-TL5 precisely measures carbon and sulfur to ensure spring fatigue performance. Applications include outgoing shipment testing and component identification. Bearing steel (GCr15, SUJ2) — Pre-tap analysis: High carbon (~1.0%), extremely low sulfur requirement. CYY-TL5 is the core device for bearing steel composition analysis, equipped with dedicated calibration standards for each steel grade.

Compare strategies: CYY-TL5 vs Spark OES

Equipment Cost: CYY-TL5 is only ~1/5 of OES cost — significantly more economical Time per Sample: CYY-TL5~35 seconds analysis + 3-5 minutes sampling; OES requires 10-30 seconds + sampling Carbon Accuracy: Both achieve high precision, meeting steel quality testing requirements Sulfur Accuracy: CYY-TL5 provides more stable low-sulfur measurements than OES Measured Elements: CYY-TL5 specializes in C and S; OES supports multi-element analysis (Fe, C, S, Mn, Si, Cr, Ni...) Operating Cost: CYY-TL5 is lower (oxygen + flux only); OES incurs medium costs (high-purity argon gas) Maintenance: CYY-TL5 is simple; OES requires complex maintenance (electrode replacement, optical system calibration)

Strategic Conclusion: CYY-TL5 does not replace OES for multi-element analysis but offers a cost-effective solution for controlling C and S levels prior to melting—two critical elements determining steel's mechanical properties. Plants can use CYY-TL5 for rapid pre-melt checks and steel grade adjustments, while using OES (if available) for final product verification before delivery. Total investment cost is only 1/5 of purchasing a standalone OES system.
