Detailed description

CYY-TL5 Infrared Carbon-Sulfur Analyzer is a dedicated laboratory instrument for quality control testing in machining factories, metal processing workshops, and materials testing centers. It employs arc combustion combined with infrared absorption detection to deliver accurate and reliable analysis results.

Why is a carbon and sulfur analyzer needed in a machining factory?

When mechanical manufacturing plants and metal processing workshops receive steel from suppliers, verifying the chemical composition—especially carbon (C%) and sulfur (S%) content—is mandatory before production. Carbon determines steel hardness and tensile strength; sulfur is a harmful element where high levels cause hot shortness during forging, stamping, or heat treatment. A deviation of just 0.1% C between two steel grades (e.g., 35# and 45#) can completely alter the product's mechanical properties.

CYY-TL5 fills this gap: although conducted in a lab, the analysis speed is only about 35 seconds per sample. Including sample preparation (powder drilling, weighing, and flux mixing), the entire process from sample receipt to C% and S% results takes just 3-5 minutes. This enables the lab to quickly inspect incoming steel shipments, verify against required standards, and decide whether to accept or reject within minutes.

Operating Principle: Infrared Absorption Method

CYY-TL5 employs Arc Combustion to oxidize the steel sample, releasing CO2 and SO2. These gases are directed into an infrared analysis chamber where the (LiTaO3 Pyroelectric Detector measures absorption intensity at specific wavelengths: CO2 absorbs strongly at 4.26 μm, while SO2 absorbs at 7.35 μm. The optical signal is converted to an electrical signal by the A/D converter at a rate of 8000 samples/second; software then integrates the curve area to calculate %C and %S.

Lambert-Beer equation: I = I0 × exp(-aPL), where I0 is incident light intensity, I is transmitted intensity after absorption, a is the absorption coefficient, P is the partial pressure of the gas, and L is the absorption path length.

Steel Sample Testing Procedure in the Laboratory

Step 1: Take a representative sample from the steel lot (bar, plate, or tube), then drill or turn it into chips/powder — approx. 1-2 minutes Step 2: Weigh approx. 0.5g of sample (steel) or 0.2g (cast iron) on digital scale 0.0001g — approx. 30 seconds Step 3: Mix with flux: silicon-molybdenum ~0.3g + granular tin ~0.3g + Pure Iron ~0.3-0.5g — approx. 30 seconds Step 4: Place in arc furnace and click "Start Analysis" Step {15]: Combustion + gas flow through infrared chamber + detector — approx. 35 seconds Step 6: Software displays C% and S%, generates report — approx. 10 seconds Total: From sample receipt to result — approx. 3-5 minutes

Steel Type Inspection App

Carbon steel 35# and 45#: 35# requires C 0.32-0.40%, S ≤0.035%; 45# requires C 0.42-0.50%, S ≤0.035%. CYY-TL5 accurately detects the 0.1% carbon difference between the two grades. Structural alloy steel (SCM435, 40Cr, 42CrMo):): Requires C ~0.33-0.43% plus specific Cr/Mo content. High sulfur (> 0.035%) causes hot cracking during forging or stamping. Tool steel (SKD11, H13, D2): High carbon (0.8-2.0%), extremely low sulfur (<0.02%). CYY-TL5 measures carbon down to 10%, sufficient for tool steel analysis. Bearing steel (GCr15, SUJ2):): Carbon ~0.95-1.05%, S ≤0.020%. Carbon deviation directly affects hardness uniformity and fatigue life. Stainless steel (304, 316, 430): Typically low carbon (<0.08% for 304L),); sulfur must be controlled (<0.03%). CYY-TL5 measures sulfur down to 0.0005%, sufficiently sensitive for ultra-low carbon stainless steel. Specialty steel (heat-resistant, wear-resistant): Complex composition; CYY-TL5 controls both carbon and sulfur—two fundamental elements before further alloying. Free-cutting steel (Y15, 12L14): Intentionally adds sulfur (up to >0.2%) to improve machinability. CYY-TL5 measures sulfur up to 0.35%, enabling accurate detection of high sulfur levels in free-cutting steel—optimizing sulfur content ensures good machinability without compromising strength. Cast steel / Cast iron: Melt shops need rapid carbon and sulfur determination to adjust composition before pouring. CYY-TL5 is the most widely used analyzer in foundries—from pre-melt analysis to finished product quality control. Carbon structural steel / High-quality carbon steel (Q235, Q345, 20#, 45#): High production volume with a wide carbon range (low <0.25%, medium 0.25-0.60%, high >0.60%); sulfur typically required at ≤0.050%. CYY-TL5 performs fast pre-melt analysis and batch inspection of finished goods. Spring steel (55CrSi, 60Si2Mn):): Medium-to-high carbon; sulfur requires strict control. CYY-TL5 precisely measures carbon and sulfur to ensure spring fatigue performance. Applications: batch release testing and composition verification. Bearing steel (GCr15, SUJ2) — pre-melt analysis: High carbon (~1.0%), extremely low sulfur requirement. CYY-TL5 is the core equipment for bearing steel composition analysis, accompanied by grade-specific calibration standards.

Compare with Spark OES

CYY-TL5 costs only about 1/5 of OES, with lower operating expenses (requires only oxygen and fluxing agents, no pure argon gas) and simpler maintenance (cleaning the torch head, replacing reagents). OES measures multiple elements (Fe, C, S, Mn, Si, Cr, Ni...) but is 5 times more expensive. CYY-TL5 specializes in carbon and sulfur—the two critical elements that determine steel's mechanical properties. Optimal strategy: use CYY-TL5 for rapid C/S checks, and OES (if available) for supplementary multi-element analysis.

Calibration and Maintenance

CYY-TL5 requires calibration each shift or daily: select 3-4 specialized standard samples with C/S content close to the steel grade being produced, perform continuous analysis, choose 2-3 results with good repeatability, and enter the standard values into the software to calibrate the coefficients. Tip: Use standard samples with higher C/S content than the target sample for more accurate results on low-content samples. CYY provides dedicated standard sample kits with equipment, helping customers progress from no capability to full control, from coarse monitoring to precise elemental adjustment—boosting efficiency and reducing costs.

Periodic maintenance: every 24 samples — clean the furnace dust collection chamber; every 60 samples — remove the filter mesh, brush off powder with a wire brush, and check for air leaks; daily — replace the air filter cotton when 1/3 becomes dirty, and clean the arc furnace filter.

Placement: Laboratory; temperature 15-30°C, humidity ≤60%, no direct drafts, and away from strong magnetic interference. Simple operation: plug in, power on/off with a single button, place the sample in the furnace, press start for analysis, and automatically save data. For details, refer to the included multi-language user manual available after purchase.
